Primary Care
At the heart of CORRECT Health’s work is a modern clinical facility serving the rural community of Chateau. The clinic is equipped with electricity, running water, an on-site staff residence, and a functioning medical laboratory — ensuring patients receive comprehensive, quality care close to home.
Our clinical team includes:
- One Medical Doctor
- Two Registered Nurses
- One Laboratory Technician
- Dedicated support staff
Together, they provide essential primary care services to thousands of community members each year.
Addressing the Most Urgent Health Needs
The clinic treats a wide range of conditions daily. Among the most common illnesses seen in the region are respiratory infections, hypertension, and diarrheal and other water-borne diseases.
By offering timely diagnosis, laboratory testing, treatment, and follow-up care, the clinic plays a critical role in preventing minor illnesses from becoming life-threatening conditions.
Accessible Care for All
CORRECT Health does not receive any financial appropriation from the Haitian government to support clinic operations or community programming. As a result, services are sustained largely through donor support.
Given the extreme poverty in the region, clinic fees are intentionally symbolic. They are designed to preserve dignity and encourage shared responsibility, while ensuring that no one is denied care due to inability to pay. In many cases, fees are waived entirely.
Examples of clinic fees:
- Co-payment: $0.25 per visit
- Prescriptions: $0.02 per pill, regardless of medication cost
- Laboratory exams: $2 per test.
Through subsidized care and compassionate service, CORRECT Health ensures that even the most vulnerable families have access to life-saving primary healthcare.
Primary Care Statistics
The clinic sees a variety of cases every day. The vast majority of cases are classified as Other as they do not fit into the categories officially designated and measured by the Ministry of Health.
Maternal, Newborn & Child Health
Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere, with an estimated 359 deaths per 100,000 live births. Approximately one in every 80 women will die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes. In rural communities like Chateau, poverty, limited infrastructure, and lack of access to care put mothers and newborns at even greater risk.
In 2019, nearly 400 women in Chateau were pregnant — yet only 65 sought prenatal care at the clinic.
To address this gap, CORRECT Health launched the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Children program to improve access to quality maternal care. The program provides:
- Prenatal and postnatal consultations
- Group prenatal education sessions
- Nutrition counseling and supplements
- Essential lab testing and prenatal vitamins
- Hygiene kits and transport support
The clinic has upgraded its maternity ward and promotes safe, facility-based deliveries. We also train traditional birth attendants (matwons) on safe delivery practices and early referral of high-risk cases, strengthening collaboration between community and clinic care.
By increasing access to consistent prenatal care and safe deliveries, CORRECT Health is helping mothers survive and babies thrive.
Child Vaccination Program
Preventable diseases remain a leading cause of death for children under five in Haiti. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect young lives.
In partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health, the Chateau clinic participates in the national immunization program, providing vaccines against:
- Measles and rubella
- Polio
- Diphtheria
- Tetanus
- Whooping cough
- Tuberculosis
Vitamin A supplementation is also provided to support healthy growth and immune function.
Through integrated maternal and child health services, CORRECT Health is building a healthier future for the next generation in Chateau.
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
Access to safe drinking water was once one of the greatest health challenges facing the rural community of Chateau. Families had to walk up to 60 minutes through steep mountain terrain to collect just two gallons of water at a time from a local spring. The water was often contaminated, contributing to outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as typhoid and other serious infections.
Today, that reality has changed.
CORRECT Health successfully designed and implemented a comprehensive potable water distribution system that now provides reliable access to clean water throughout the community
What Was Accomplished
- Construction of a 26,000-gallon reservoir to store pumped spring water
- Installation of solar-powered pumps to transport water safely and sustainably
- Extension of water lines to the clinic, ensuring clean water for patient care
- Expansion of distribution infrastructure throughout the community
- Installation of additional piping to extend water access to the local school
Through this completed multi-phase project — totaling an investment of approximately $250,000 USD, including $100,000 committed directly by CORRECT Health — safe drinking water is now significantly more accessible to families in Chateau.
Disaster Relief
Southern Haiti is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. When crisis strikes, remote mountain communities like Chateau are often the last to receive assistance. In these critical moments, CORRECT Health becomes the frontline responder.
Hurricane Matthew (2016)
When Hurricane Matthew devastated southern Haiti in October 2016, widespread destruction left families without shelter, clean water, or access to healthcare. Roads were blocked, crops were destroyed, and water sources were contaminated. CORRECT Health responded by:
- Providing emergency medical care through the Chateau clinic
- Distributing essential medications and hygiene supplies
- Supporting disease prevention efforts to reduce outbreaks of cholera and other water-borne illnesses
- Assisting vulnerable families with basic relief support
2021 Earthquake Response
On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti, killing more than 2,000 people and injuring thousands. Although Chateau reported no fatalities, the earthquake caused significant structural damage to homes, the clinic, and staff residences.
Because large relief organizations rarely reach this remote region, the community relied heavily on CORRECT Health.
Our response included:
Immediate Emergency Support
- Conducting needs assessments of affected households
- Distributing hygiene kits with soap and water purification tablets
- Providing staple food items such as rice and oil
- Organizing health fairs to distribute free medications
Even amid national instability and supply chain challenges, CORRECT Health remained operational and committed to protecting the health of Chateau’s 12,000 residents.
Disasters will continue to impact Haiti. By maintaining a permanent healthcare presence in Chateau, CORRECT Health ensures that emergency response begins immediately — not days or weeks later.
